What it actually means
Comfortable, everyday clothing with no formal requirement. Good jeans, a simple dress, knitwear, clean trainers or sandals. 'Casual' from a host usually still means put-together, not scruffy.
The safe choice
Well-fitting jeans or an easy dress with a clean shoe and one considered accessory. Relaxed but intentional.
Too formal
A suit, a cocktail dress or heels can feel like you misread the invitation.
Too casual
Gym wear, pyjama-adjacent loungewear, or anything genuinely worn-out.
Common mistakes
- Reading 'casual' as 'anything goes' and turning up scruffy
- Overdressing and feeling out of place
- Ignoring the venue - a nice restaurant reads dressier than a picnic
- Beat-up shoes that undercut an otherwise easy look
By country & season
Hugely context-dependent. A host's 'casual' is usually smart-casual in disguise. Season sets the fabric and layering.
